About

Our Vision and Goals

The Driftless Hill Prairie Initiative aims to establish a comprehensive inventory and monitoring system for hill prairies in the Driftless Region. By gathering and analyzing data on existing ecosystems, we seek to foster collaboration among stakeholders to enhance informed decision-making and proactive management strategies. Our vision focuses on developing tools to track changes over time, unite diverse stakeholders, and prioritize conservation actions that will protect and restore these vital habitats, ensuring their ecological integrity for future generations.

Developing data driven solutions to conservation needs

Step 1.  Inventory and Monitoring Tool Development

Enabling fast and efficient monitoring of sites throughout the Driftless

The first step is to develop a comprehensive inventory and monitoring tool that utilizes advanced technology to collect and manage data on hill prairies across the Driftless Region. This system will integrate high-resolution satellite imagery and field survey data, allowing for real-time assessment of prairie conditions. By employing remote sensing techniques and geographic information systems (GIS), the tool will facilitate the mapping of habitat extent, species diversity, and the threats posed by invasive species. The goal is to provide land managers and conservationists with an accessible, user-friendly platform that supports informed decision-making regarding conservation priorities and restoration efforts.

Step 2. Data Analysis and Reporting

Determine the state of remnant prairies.

Once the inventory tool is established, the next step involves analyzing the gathered data to identify key trends in the health and distribution of hill prairies. This analysis will highlight areas that are most vulnerable and require immediate attention, as well as those that are thriving and may serve as models for restoration efforts. Comprehensive reports will be generated to share findings with stakeholders, emphasizing data-driven recommendations for conservation actions. This process will ensure that restoration strategies are based on the best available evidence, fostering a proactive approach to prairie management.

3. Stakeholder Engagement and Collaborative Restoration

Build partnerships to implement effective management strategies.

The final step focuses on engaging a diverse coalition of stakeholders—including landowners, conservation organizations, and local communities—to implement collaborative restoration strategies. By fostering partnerships and encouraging community involvement, this step aims to develop tailored management plans that address the unique needs of individual hill prairie sites. Collaboration will enhance resource sharing, knowledge exchange, and public awareness of the importance of conserving these ecosystems. Engaging stakeholders throughout the project is crucial for ensuring the sustainability and success of restoration initiatives, ultimately contributing to the long-term preservation of hill prairies in the Driftless Region.
